Dr Lownie graduated with her medical degree (MBBCh) from Wits University in 2003. She completed her internship at Groote Schuur Hospital in 2004 and her community service at East Griqualand and Usher Memorial Hospital in Kokstad.
Thereafter, Dr Lownie was diagnosed with a form of cancer which, at the time, carried a prognosis of less than a 20% chance of five-year survival. As a result of the treatments and surgeries she had to undergo, working in clinical medicine was almost impossible. She therefore worked for several years as a clinical trial coordinator and research programme manager, and ultimately became the Trauma Programme Manager at Netcare Milpark Hospital. During this time, she gained invaluable insight not only into trauma and emergency medicine, but also into the management of clinical trials and other important areas of research. She also completed a Master of Science in Emergency Medicine (MSc Med Emergency Medicine) and gained clinical experience working in various private emergency departments in Johannesburg.
In 2012, Dr Lownie left Netcare to work for a few months in a corporate pharmaceutical environment. This experience, combined with her personal journey with cancer, piqued her interest in the field of psychiatry and mental health.

She subsequently completed her specialist training in the Department of Psychiatry at Wits University, which included working in many general and psychiatric hospitals across the Gauteng area. She obtained her specialist fellowship (FC Psych SA) through the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa in May 2018. After working in private practice for several years, Dr Lownie developed a growing interest in the optimisation of learning and occupational functioning, particularly in individuals with ADHD and anxiety-related disorders. She subsequently completed a Diploma as an Integral Coaching Practitioner in 2021. Dr Lownie enjoys sharing her knowledge and teaching whenever possible.
Dr Lownie is currently working in private practice in the Sandton area. She has a particular interest in the management and coaching of ADHD, anxiety, and related disorders. She offers clinical psychiatric management for these conditions, as well as for other psychiatric disorders.
In addition, she has developed a variety of workshops for schools and businesses, as well as individual and team coaching programmes. These initiatives focus on improving learning potential and occupational functioning by incorporating neuroscience-based tools and research to optimise brain function.
It is her passion to assist individuals, children, adolescents, and adults, in reaching and even surpassing their full potential.
